Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Patrick Mikkonen. I am starting my 29th year in education. I started my educational career in Avon, SD as a 7-12 Social Science and K-6 PE teacher while coaching football, basketball, and track. I was in Avon for seven years. I then moved to Garretson, SD where I became the 6-12 Principal and coached football. I was there for 5 years. My wife and I then moved to Mount Vernon where for the last 16 years I have been the Superintendent along with both of the Prinicpalships at one time or another. I am married to my wife Carrie who is a Dental Hygienist. She works at Dental Health Partners in Mitchell. Our son Zachary is a National Guard member and is attending college at Black Hills State University. Our oldest daughter will be a freshman at South Dakota State University, and our youngest is Aida, who is a freshman here at Parkston High School.
I am excited to be given the opportunity to serve as the next Superintendent of the Parkston School District. The position has had continuity over a large span of time. I believe I will be able to add to the lineage of solid administrators that the district has been fortunate to have. I realize there are some large shoes to fill.
My education philosophy is quite simple. We are here to serve students. It is our job to provide the best learning experiences possible throughout a child's education. They drive what we do. Academics are the first priority while providing the extended experiences of extra-curricular activities. They all make for a well-rounded educational experience that helps young children become young adults who then become solid contributing members of society. Parents play an integral part in the process and with your support, we can continue to provide a quality educational experience for every child. I am looking forward to meeting the parents and patrons of the Parkston community. Please reach out with questions, concerns, or feedback you may have. We will strive to do our best!! Go Trojans
